Not only does it affect your self esteem, but it also puts you at risk of suffering from diseases associated with high calorie levels. However, in this fast paced world, with our busy and hectic schedules it is becoming harder to keep fit as we barely have time to exercise or watch what we eat. We therefore want to look for the easy way out that guarantees instant results. There are many fad diets and weight loss programs out there that promise to have you lose weight in just a few days.

These diets or programs guarantee to give you toned abs in no time without you having to sweat. The manufacturers of these diets are making a killing because most people want to lose weight "the lazy way' without having to put in any work. You may not want to hear this, but the truth is losing weight requires hard work, patience and discipline on your side. You are not going to get that dream body by just watching a few videos and skipping a couple of meals, sure you may lose a few pounds but the moment you go back to your old habits they will come piling back faster than you can say diet. The best way to lose weight therefore is to adopt a healthy lifestyle as well as exercise regularly.

What you eat determines how much weight you gain, you may have heard this before and you will hear it again because it is a hard fact. A diet that is that is too high in fats and calories will only contribute to weight gain. In that regard if you want to lose weight you must make a choice to eat healthier and find alternatives to high calorie foods. Making a switch from high calorie foods to healthier foods can sometimes be a hard choice to make. After all most high calorie foods like ice-creams, fast-foods, cakes and sodas are so delicious and make us feel good whenever we eat them, but it is a choice we have to make if we want to maintain a healthy lifestyle. There are many alternatives to high calorie foods available to people who want to shed a few extra pound or maintain a healthy cholesterol level.

When baking, you can opt to use applesauce as an alternative to high calorie oils that are normally used. This way your baked goods are keep moist while at the same time cutting on calorie and fat. Applesauce is also a good substitute for butter, vegetable oils and shortening in you cooking. When you crave for a big bowl of ice-cream for dessert, think of all the calories it contain and opt for a fruit sorbet instead. A sorbet comes in many fruit flavors, is equally creamy and has much lower calories compared to ice-cream. Another substitute for ice-cream is low fat yoghurt. You can also opt for a homemade fruit salad which allows you to monitor the ingredients included.

You can also find alternatives to replace your favorite snacks. For example rather than munch on a bag of potato chips that has zero nutritional value, opt for popcorn instead especially those that are lightly seasoned. Another option is whole grain snacks that contain added fiber. Whenever you need to quench your thirst, choose water instead of soft drinks which contain empty calories and sugar.

Exercising regularly will also help you shed a few pounds as well as maintain a healthy body weight. In most cases when people hear the word exercise, they imagine running for miles or taking crunches and the thought just puts them off. However exercise does not have to be a tedious affair. The key is to choose something that you enjoy doing because then it will not seem like a task. For example if you like walking, spare some few minutes every day to take a walk. The idea is to keep your body active and in turn burn off some calories.
